Obituary

Barron, Mary T. (Née Marrinan)

Born on August 23, 1936, Mary was the only daughter of Barbara and Cornelius Marrinan. Growing up in the Bronx, Mary had one younger brother John who predeceased her in 2010. Mary grew up surrounded by numerous cousins whom she loved deeply and often spoke of their strong family bonds.

Mary was a graduate of Our Saviors School and Cathedral High School. On September 14, 1957, she married Joseph J. Barron, who predeceased her in 1987, and they had four children.

A lifelong learner, Mary went back to school after raising her children and graduated summa cum laude from Lehman College. She continued her education by earning three Masters Degrees in Reading, English and Guidance Counseling.
Once she had completed the last of her graduate degrees, she seamlessly transferred from teacher to guidance counseling where she truly found her career calling. Mary was able to assist hundreds of students in finding the right colleges/careers as a dedicated high school guidance counselor. Mary finally retired in June 2008, looking forward to planned vacations and more time with family.

Mary loved to travel, especially to anywhere warm and with a beach. Costa Rica and Mexico were favorite vacation spots. Being by the ocean, and spending time at the shore with family and friends was her joy.

Mary was the proud and loving mother of Barbara DiFiore (Julius ‘Jay’), Deborah (Dave), Susan Cisneros (Robert) and John (Alejandra). She was also the cherished grandmother (affectionately known as “G’ma”) of nine: Francis, Andrea and Stephen DiFiore, Jacqueline Martel, Olivia, Emma and Matthew Cisneros, and Nicole and Michael Barron....and the delighted great-grandmother of one - Viviana Marie. She is also survived by her dear sister-in-law Evelyn Marrinan, niece Audrey Kelly and nephew Neil Marrinan.

She treasured a cup of hot tea, enjoyed ANY kind of chocolate, believed red lipstick was a game changer and never met a dance floor she could not conquer. Her rendition of the Macarena at my wedding (and many other family gatherings) was one for the books. She was our biggest fan and our gentlest critic.

But most of all, Mary will be remembered for her incredible kindness, for her uncanny ability to “connect“ people (she was the original LinkedIn) and for her unwavering belief that education, formal or otherwise, could absolutely change the world for the better. We can attest that the way she lived her life has certainly proven that belief to be true.

We will love her and miss her forever.
